Greetings Newcomer! Welcome to the Game Fest Brisbane website!
This page of information is designed to familiarise you with the event, and to make some recommendations to you to get you started...
Recommendation 1 - our mailing list:
Please go to the Contact tab find my email address 'spelled-out but non-clickable' and send me (Mark McPherson) an email saying that you are "interested in attending Game Fest Brisbane" and to "please add me to the email mailing list" so that you get all upcoming announcements and communications.
Here's some more information on attendance and to help you choose some games to play....
TIMING:
The Event runs from 7pm til 11pm on Friday night (10th of August), starts again on Saturday at 9am and runs til midnight (with multiple games running in 2 and 4 hour blocks throughout the day.. i.e. If you attended one game, it would usually run for 4 hours, though a couple of games on Saturday only run for 2 hours.) The games start again on Sunday morning at 9am and the event concludes at 1pm that afternoon.
ATTENDANCE:
You can attend for one, some or all of the games over the course of the weekend and you can come and visit anytime you'd like.. to see other games are being played; though it's always more fun to play in my opinion. :-)
DINNER EVENT:
There is a group dinner on Saturday night from 6pm to 8pm that you'd be welcome to attend regardless of how much or how little you are there over the weekend... It's a chance to socialise and attendees are encouraged to bring their non-gaming partners along to the the dinner as well. The dinner is self-catered (i.e. you pay for yourself), but the GameFest organisers make the group booking. More information on this as we get closer to the time.
Recommendation 2 - game selection (information correct as of 3:11pm 7th July 2018 GMT +10):
In terms of attending this year's event as a first-timer, I'd like to make the following recommendations based on when you might wish to come along and also based on how experienced a gamer you believe you are..
EXPERIENCE DEFINITIONS:
New player = "I have played Monopoly, Scrabble or Chess and may also have played Risk once"
Experienced player = "I have played Settlers of Catan or Carcassonne a couple of times and I'm ready for more.."
Advanced player = "I know the difference between a Eurogame and Ameritrash and I can handle anything new.. bring it on!"
(Not entirely sure you need much advice from me - but hey, that's cool - please make your selections based on your intended attendance times and enjoy!!)
Attending Friday night?
New player:
I recommend you sign-up for "The Settlers of Catan" - a wonderful game that is super-easy to learn and stacks of fun to play.
Experienced player:
I recommend you sign-up for "Xia: Legends of a Drift System" or "Mansions of Madness 2" - both awesome - take your pick!
Attending Saturday morning?
New player:
I recommend "Pandemic" - a fun co-operative game where you try to cure the world of global disease outbreaks. It isn't as yucky as it sounds - it's more of a resource management game where you help to stop the spread of disease by establishing disease control centres and fund research into cures on a global map; fun and addictive..
Experienced player:
I recommend you sign-up for "Pandemic" (as a refresher/familiarisation with one of the landmark games of the genre..) then followed by "Pandemic Survival" - a great combo...
or
sign-up for "Castles of Burgundy" - another classic from Ravensburger and highly recommended by Board Game Geek!
Attending Saturday afternoon?
New player:
I recommend "A Touch of Evil" - a co-operative investigative murder-mystery game where your team try to stop an ancient horror monster from terrorizing a town. Possible villans include vampires, werewolves and the headless horseman.
Experienced player:
I recommend you sign-up for "Memoir 44" (if you haven't played it yet - it straddles the gap between conventional wargaming and boardgaming - well worth the effort).
Otherwise, I highly recommend either "Rising Sun" (a new kid on the block)
or
"A Touch of Evil" - a solid game akin to Mansions of Madness or House on the Hill...
Attending Saturday evening (after dinner)?
New player:
I recommend "Arkham Horror" - a co-operative investigative horror game where your team needs to save the world from an ancient evil... very atmospheric... a bit spooky but fun!
Experienced player:
Either "Arkham Horror" (a brilliant and classic game - settle in for some horror-themed gumshoe-fun!)
or "Big Book of Madness" (an interesting new take on 'save the world' with astute use of dark magic..)
Attending Sunday morning?
New player:
I recommend "Vast the Crystal Caverns" - fun romp in a dungeon exploration setting (in the spirit of "Dungeons and Dragons") but played as a board game, where each player represents an aspect of a 'living dungeon'.. Lot's of fun, very engaging..
Experienced player:
I highly recommend "Vast the Crystal Caverns" (if you haven't played it yet - then please do - it's amazing!)
Otherwise, I couldn't think of anything better for a Star Wars fan than to partake in the iconic "Battle of Hoth" with the Star Wars miniatures game. A spectacle to be sure..

We invite adults only by the way; we have no facilities for children to play I'm afraid.
Please do not hesitate to ask me any questions you have?
Cheers,
Mark :-)
